The practice

An introduction to osteopathy

A manual practice that assesses restricted movement and tension in different structures of the body, within the framework of French Decree No. 2007-435 (functional disorders).

A manual practice

Osteopathy, a manual practice

Osteopathy is a manual practice concerned with restricted movement and perceived tension in different structures of the body, including joints, muscles and tissues.

The practitioner carries out a manual assessment and, if it appears appropriate, uses techniques intended to support comfort and mobility. Osteopathy does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment.

Looking at the whole body

A whole-body approach

The different areas of the body are connected. The practitioner observes the body as a whole to better understand the context of the discomfort described.

The area where discomfort is felt is not always the main focus of the manual care.

Understanding your situation

Understanding the context of your discomfort

Back discomfort may, for example, be related to an old injury, posture at work or a period of tension. The osteopathic assessment therefore considers the person’s complaint within the context of their daily life.

For an acute or persistent symptom, or one that may suggest a medical condition, medical advice is necessary before or alongside the consultation.

Osteopathy does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. Would you like to find out more? See “When to consult?” or “Who is it for?”.
